Why there's no Commander in Battlefield 3?

DICE have explained the reason why they didn't include the Commander role in Battlefield 3.

Oh boy. I bet the people at DICE and Electronic Arts are in a bit of a huff right now. A developers' build of the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 has apparently been leaked, spawning a few YouTube videos' worth of footage.

Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson, admitted that the role, previously present in Battlefield 2, was "a bit flawed."

"When the dev team sat down and thought about this, the Commander role was a very important and hot topic in the studio I have to say," Troedsson said. "Some people wanted us to implement it in the absolute same way as we had before; some of us wanted us to reinvigorate how we do it.

"I don't know how many people have tried to play as a Commander in Battlefield 2, but it's kind of a strange experience. Everyone agrees that that actual role of the Commander is very, very cool. But the problem is that only one person per team could play it, and it was always the highest ranking one.

"But even for the people that played as a Commander, the first thing they did was what? They ran off to a corner somewhere and lay down there and tried to hide so the Spec Ops guy wouldn't find them when he was going to blow up the installations.

"They basically spent the whole match lying on the ground on some obscure corner of the map, hoping not to get knifed in the back and trying to support people. There was something very cool about the Commander role and there was also something a bit flawed, we have to say."

To make up for the role and the lack thereoff, Troedsson added that the game still offers squad leaders who can order artillery strikes and mortar attack through multiplayer unlock. Though the Commander role in BF2 was fun, it's good to hear that DICE is trying to balance the game to be fair to everyone. What do you think folks? Are you dissappointed with the lack of the Commander role in Battlefield 3?

Battlefield 3 will be out on October 25th. The multiplayer beta on the other hand will start on September 29th across all platforms and will run through October 10th.

although i played "a few" hours on battlefield 2, as i brought le game serval months after it's release I never go a commander position on any round despite being an average+ player.
I think that speak for itself, I'm rather glad that the commander as somehow disapeared.
I hope to see all of you soon enough on the beta and afterward on the PC servers.

On a pub server commander and the role generally sucks. BF2 has been out a long time and communities have finally formed around specific server(s). Knowing most of the other 64 people you are playing against is a blast and knowing when you have a good commander and general strategies is what made BF2 fun as hell. Without that its just back to the old crazy no teamwork BF1942 which was fun ... back in the day.

Aw darn.

I loved playing as commander, I never sat in a corner unless the server rules called for it.

That's what the Command Rose was for, until it glitched out and wouldn't let you drop anything.
