Valve unhappy with method drops system, might eliminate completely |
Are you happy with the new random method drops system in Team Fortress 2? Cos apparently, Valve isn't. Robin Walker said as much in an interview over at Community Fortress. They're even considering eliminating the unlock system entirely. Yep, it's that bad.I think we've learned that the random drop system is only good for some types of things, like the rare cosmetic hats.
It's good for delivering items to newer players over time, so they're not swamped with choices when they're starting out, and they're not required to grind achievements to get them once they reach the point where they want to start making strategic choices. For competitive players, it's obviously a bad way to deliver items.
Instead of going through all this trouble, a more expedient method would be to simply just hand over the weapons, simple and smooth.
At the very least, future packs will all you to use achievements to get the new items, but we might move to a mode where we just give them to you. As part of our goal of supporting tournaments more, I think we'll probably add better tools for them to control exactly what players can and can't use within matches.
The other thing the team is not happy about? The trend wherein competitive players are flocking to smaller maps that public players don't usually go to. A tad bit discreetly exclusive, huh?
We've got a map where we're trying out areas that modify themselves based on the number of players in the game, in the hopes that both public and competitive players can use it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I like it as it is. I mean, I've gotten ahold of lots of the weapons and it gave me incentives to keep playing to get the rest. The only down side is that I got them too quick. It didnt' really feel like I earned them... I must say though, that the system before was broken. I spent a lot of time trying to get achievements only to fail miserably. I even went to an achievements server, but after about 20 minutes I asked wtf I was doing grinding in an FPS and left.
