Unreal Engine 3 supporting Flash 11

Yesterday was a big day for everyone who has ever used a Mac product and I've always felt that no matter what bad news comes someone's way, there is always a silver lining...this really isn't it, but I wanted to get out my condolences and also report on something iPhone-related.

So the Adobe Max 11 conference was on and when discussing the upcoming Flash 11, Epic Games Tim Sweeney took to the stage to show the impressive Unreal Engine 3 being able to run using Flash.

"With UE3 and Flash, games [that were built] for high-end consoles can now run on the Web or as Facebook apps reaching an enormous user base", Sweeney said at the conference, "This totally changes the playing field for game developers who want to widely deploy and monetize their games", clearly showing where Sweeney and the next Facebook developers have their mind set.

With Flash Player 11 coming out yesterday, I think timing could not have been better for showing off the old engine being brought to new products. A flash-based SDK was rumoured to be in development to be released before the year is through. Also Epic's Mike Capps and Donald Mustard revealed the sequel to Infinity Blade on Apple's iPhone 4S, showing off the new capabilities.

"We're excited that Epic Games is tapping into the latest capabilities in Adobe Flash...11 to power its Unreal Engine 3", said Adobe Gaming Solutions group product manager, "As the console of the web (I like it!), Flash is delivering immersive gaming experience across screens and we're thrilled to have Epic...using Flash...to deliver its blockbuster, premier 3D games on the web", possibly Gears on your browser by 2013?

This is a huge leap forward for any game developer wanting to branch out their creative and visual abilities for games on Facebook. The amount of revenue that could be accumulated at the moment is unbelievable, but eventually with more competition will dry up and move on to the next platform or site, whatever that may be.
