Unity Lands a Million Devs |

I’m not great with technical things, but I’m pretty sure a game engine is something developers use to build games. Off the top of my head, I can think of three such engines—CryENGINE, FrostBite and Unreal. Most of the games we love aren’t built from scratch, but rely on some sort of existing framework in the form of one of these (or other) engines.

The Unity engine originally launched in 2005, and was a bit slow to build its userbase. But recent years have seen rapid expansion for the engine, as numerous development studios jump on its bandwagon. By 2010, Unity had landed 250,000 devs, by 2011 that number had risen to 750,000. As of this year, they’ve officially crossed the 1,000,000 mark. That’s one million developer registrations—individual installs are up to around six million.
CEO David Helgason had offered some words to mark the achievement:
“When we released Unity 1.0 back in 2005, we didn't even dream numbers like that, but simply started by trying to be a great tool for the few hundred customers who adopted Unity. That goal remains the same, as we now use our incredible momentum to improve our products and extend our reach. We're just getting started.”
Unity is indeed just getting started. The company has just pushed Unity 3.5 to market, and has also worked out a deal with Adobe to help devs target the Flash platform. All factors indicate that Unity will continue to steam along, gathering new devs as it goes.
Do you have any experience with Unity or its games? What do you think?

In fact from what I can tell most of Unity's works has been on developing a converter from Unity -> Stage 3D.
