UK Channel starts Educational Sims 3 show |

UK TV station Channel 4 has launched their new web series called SuperMes which has been using The Sims 3 as a machineima tool to educate children. The game is being utilised by UK Production company Somethin' Else to create bits of programming for children and teenagers to teach them about life lessons as they move through the EA title. "This is one of the most exciting projects we have made yet and points to the future of interactive" said Somethin' Else CCO Paul Bennun about the Channel 4 project.
Claire Ridley, the UK business lead for EA says that "it's no surprise a game like The Sims 3 can be put to such creative use, but we are still incredibly excited by this truly novel use of our world-beating technology." Two things Ms. Ridley, people have been making machinima for quite some time, this may just be the first time (outside of The Minecraft Teacher) where kids will be learning from a video game world, based on it's game mechanics, albiet based on our world.
Apparently, the show was commissioned by Jo Twist, a former UKIE producer, and the aim was to make something to teach teens about life through the game itself. Paul Bennun added that "It's incredibly moving and funny at time, and a true collaboration between humans and robots. We have become very attached to them. We are delighted to be able to work with Channel 4 Education to make it real." Again, why does it seem like the people setting these things up have no idea what they're doing. '...humans and robots...', yes there is a digital element here, but games and machinima are not robots. Just digital code...anyway, the project is quite interesting and exciting and could possibly lead to more machinima projects in the future, educational or not.
