Ubisoft and their confusing statements about piracy |

So, what exactly, does Ubisoft think of piracy on the PC?

In a story from earlier this week, Stanislas Mettra, Developer and relatively high up employee of Ubisoft, claimed that I Am Alive, an apocolyptic life-sim RPG game will not be coming to the PC because it will be pirated.

Then, there was some back pedalling the very next day, with Mr Mettra claiming that he would really "love" to put I Am Alive in to the hands of PC owners, but logistically, that is still a very hard task.

And after all that went down we were left with the claims surrounding Ghost Recon Online and its DRM-free, free-to-play online stance that was squarely aimed at combatting any attempts by pirates.
The statements from earlier in the week by Mr Mettra, even after their retractions, were still in contradiction with what Ubisoft employee Sebastian Arnoullt had to say about Ghost Recon Online.
There is of course some validity in both statements.
Firstly, Mettra's claim that porting the game to PC, only to have the majority of players pirate the game anyway (and therefore not justify the initial investment) is true. Piracy has been on the rise across all gaming platforms for some time, and console ports would understandably become harder to pitch to investors as a result.
Arnoullt's way of approaching the matter with Ghost Recon Online is also worthy of discussion, because it stares in the face of piracy. Instead of claiming that there is no way around the matter, Arnoullt looks to find a solution that will suit PC gamers, as well as justify their initial investments.
Should all future ports from console to PC contain a micro payment transaction system, with a free game launch to get around pirates?
Or is a more traditional and considered approach required when looking at porting the game to the PC, with only those games likely to pass certain sales limits getting the nod?
