Ubisoft Always-On DRM Strikes Again

Ubisoft’s solution to the DRM debate was what is known as “always-on” DRM. Basically, in order to play Ubisoft’s games, you must have a persistent internet connection. While you play, your system periodically checks in with Ubisoft’s servers to ensure that your game isn’t (gasp!) pirated.

It’s a good idea in theory, but a terrible one in practice. People without strong internet connections experience constant disconnects even from single player content, and issues with Ubisoft’s servers have rendered several games unplayable on multiple occasions. It’s safe to say that the gaming public isn’t generally fond of always-on DRM.

And here’s yet another reason to be against restrictive DRM: Ubisoft has announced that it’s shuffling a bit of its hardware around next week (making upgrades and the like), and as a result of this in-house tinkering, several titles will be effectively shut down. HAWX 2, The Settlers 7 and Might and Magic: Heroes 6 will all be inaccessible while Ubisoft gets its hardware sorted – there’s no estimation from the company regarding how long this will take.

Ubisoft’s servers shut down on February 7, locking out thousands of players for an unknown duration. And while this information certainly serves to support the anti-always-on DRM argument, Ubisoft still believes in the concept and considers it a shining success.

What do you think? Should a publisher have the ability to shut down your games remotely (either on purpose or by accident), or should you control access to games you buy?

Here's an idea: buy them for 360 or PS3, problem solved

Except for those people that do not have either console. Therefor buying a console just for a single publisher isn't exactly a solution.

My biggest issue with this type of DRM is what happens when I want to play those games in 20 years for a bit of retro fun? Can we expect Ubisoft servers to be around keeping the games alive? I don't think so. If I pay for and own the game, I should have full access to it whenever and wherever I want, and a persistant internet connection isn't always possible. I take my laptop with me when I go on vacation and I don't always have an internet connection.

This is exactly what I've been preaching since Xbox and PS3 games needed mandatory updates and stability patches from their servers. Do you see Xbox live or PSN running 10 years down the line? I would suppose not. Theirfore ruining any gameplay in the future.

I don't know if I buy that one. When you buy any software there is NEVER...EVER....the insinuation that you will be able to use it forever.

Nothing lasts forever. Hardly anything lasts 20 years. There is stuff today that even DOSBOX can't handle. So 20 years from now you can't be expected to play any of this stuff, servers or not.

I would back off your 20 year mark. I have a game that I bought 6 years ago that I could no longer play because the licensing servers are non existent. Then I found a crack and now I can play it just fine. So that goes to how it can happen but even then you have no LEGAL right to play the game forever. If the medium you play it on is no longer valid then THAT'S LIFE!!!

Want an example? Good luck playing your beta tapes. Good luck playing your 8-track tapes. Even if you found a player the heads on them would surely be toast.

Sorry, but this is the dumbest thing I've ever read on this website. Yes, there is an insinuation that you will be able to use it forever. If you have a game disc and you keep it safe and working and do everything possible to keep it perfectly working, the game will eventually stop working because of the company any not you. That means that the company is stopping you from playing the game instead of some reason of your own. It is not fair for someone to sell you something, and then later come by and break what they sold you after you've done your best to keep it working perfectly.

No legal right to play the game forever?? Are you kidding????? He does have the right to play the game for as long as he lives since he was the person who bought it.

8-tracks and beta tapes still work. They aren't broken by the people who sold them to you. If this is seriously your method of thought, then may I sell you some software that I will make stop working in a few days without letting you know so that you can rebuy it from me so that I can break it again and continue the cycle? I'd love to perpetually get your money that way.

I guess in the context of PC gaming it's less likely to be playing the games in 20 years, but there are people that play NES games, whether through a real system or emulator. If they own the game emulation is legal. My point is we are gambling when we buy these games. If the company goes under then no servers. No servers no game. Maybe an extreme example, but it's entirely possible.

I don't buy Ubisoft games any more quite intentionally (yeah, I know... big loss =P). But seriously, I don't care if you LOVE the Lakers. If they rape you at the gate you stop going to games.
