Supererogatory, info-digger extraordinaire, dug up the resume of one Ruben Farrus, containing what are allegedly details on Thief 4. His job description basically lets it slip that there will be "extreme situations", alongside "memorable sequences with altered controls and more.
- Developing pre-production concepts into fully-designed systems (rewards
schedule, shops, escape gates, public zones, etc.) - Designing the side-content of the gameʼs hub: activities, enticers, goals,
flow and rewards - Formulating the design guidelines for “extreme situations”; memorable
scripted sequences with altered controls, camera and/or gameplay rules.
The last we heard about a potential Thief 4 reveal was way back in January, with rumors pointing to a GDC 2011 reveal. Of course, we all know that no such thing happened at the said event. With development taking so long, and secrecy strictly implemented, we can't help but wonder now what the devs meant when they said they were making "leaps and bounds" in the game's development.

"Extreme situations" = Forced encounters with no way you can avoid them, where if you don't pick the exact correct action you fail, if you don't mash the buttons in the correct sequence at a speed that only a 13 year old after sixteen cappuccino's can manage then you fail, if you don't forget all about the games core concept of stealth and get the heavy weaponry out and go kick some butt then you fail.
If this is the case then they just lost a customer, I can buy any game on the market and get that experience, I want thief because it's different, I want thief because I have to think instead of react, I want thief because there's always a stealthy alternative to a button mashing reaction fest, the challenge is to find it.
"Memorable sequences with altered controls" = Unskippable in game cutscenes where you can't do anything, can't steal anything, can't blackjack anything, can't run away, can't escape, where your only real option is to watch the marionettes at play for ten minutes before returning to the game and nudging it along to the next sequence in the movie
Yawn, just like half the games on the market.
Sorry but that will also lose a customer, if I want a movie I'll go buy a movie.
I want a game not a movie with game sections that need to be completed before the next scene is shown.
Give me the grainy low res briefing movies of the original any day.
Sorry, not impressed with that statement.
