Swedish Pirate Party Invited to Swedish Gaming Show, Then Banned

The Swedish Pirate Party are the flagship for the power of piracy on an entire country. It is that big and important an issue that they even started a party. In comparison, in Australia there is a party for hunting, boating and fishing, and considering the pro-conservation and youthful vegans in this country, I doubt they will ever be in power, Pirate Party on the other hand, have almost been in power...twice. So our story rings somewhat true of "Party-ism" and prejudice and I shall not stand for it!

The Swedish Game Industry isn't that huge, but it's big enough to host a gaming show to give a bit of advertisement for upcoming games and show off some lovely new tech. The Pirate Party, having some kind of stake in the whole games industry were invited to GameEx and then days before they were meant to turn up for the Expo were turned away and told they were Banned from the entire event.

Pirate Party leader Anna Troberg was told when asking a few questions about the show, from a very stressed representative and said something "vague" about "not wanting any problems." Troberg, like any sane person, thought it was a bit odd and in the afternoon was told by the fair manager, who may have the most wasted awesome name of, Bear Wengse, that they told the party kindly and firmly  that they were not allowed to attend the fair.

Wengse said to the party that Gamex was not a "political venue" and expressed worry that the appearance of The Pirate Party could cause problems with some of their planned activities, as they are percieved as criminals to many. Troberg said as a political party they wish to change the laws and not break them, much like the Social Democratic Youth League, who were actually allowed to go to Gamex despite their own support of decriminalisation of non-commercial file sharing.

Troberg ended on a positive note

Nonetheless, Troberg is sticking to the high road in the dispute. She actually thanked the Gamex people for the ban, saying it resulted in more exposure for the party than it would have received through the show. And although the Pirate Party wasn't allowed in, it was well represented anyway: members of the party's Young Pirate group gave away free Pirate Party t-shirts to attendees who wanted to show their support.

I have to agree that when an industry does have a large online presence that they should really be focusing there and stop putting so much money into DRM.

I hate the weay DLC is going now. Companies get to drag titles out and milk the hell out of them. Good for us as consumers because obviously a game lasts longer, but paying for extra content is just insane.

Especially for things like "old school maps" in games like MW2. I own MW1 but I have to pay £11 for FIVE MAPS I already own?! I think not.

If they weren't going to buy it in the first place they were never a sale. It does however get them interested in the future titles to purchase them. It's easier to pirate games on consoles which is why I laugh by those that say "it's not worth making a game for the pc due to piracy." Yes there is piracy everywhere. Not everyone pirates the game. There's a small percentage that actually know how to pirate a game even if it's easy as hell to do. Not only that the DRM they put in place makes people pirate their game. Look at Ubisoft with From Dust for example. They originally said "one time DRM activation" which was true, but misleading from everyone thinking "one time" instead of "one time every time you launch the game." What did that end up doing? A LOT of Steam refunds and people just pirating it.

tl;dr You can download games easy for consoles and it's just an excuse not to develop for the PC.

Piracy is killing a lot of industries. People that put their hard work into making games deserve to be rewarded.

Its the same in the X..X..X industry. Video sharing websites are killing the industry. Especially homosexual videos.

@ Musey

Piracy isn't killing the industry foo, Gamestop and other major used game retailers are the ones that have been affecting the economy of the games industry.

Yes, piracy is also affecting the industry but worst when it is coupled with gamestop like stores.

We all know that the solution is for game publishers lower the ridiculous $60 price tag on their games. This would definitely 'decrease' game piracy but not eliminate it since people will still pirate.

No its really not and I was being sarcastic in my first post. They're making more money then they ever did. If anything is killing all the industries piracy apparently affects, its the greedy money men. (you sort of touched on) the same people who are saying its piracy.

The funny thing is, Game/Movie/music Piracy isn't killing the Industry. They make enough money as it is, all piracy does is cut down on the amount they earn which is bad but not destructive. Piracy is not going to kill the industry as companies make way too much money to even think about stopping producing stuff even though piracy exists.

Yarrr....You know what I think harms the industry the most?

Game Companies.

By flooding the market with s*it games. Don't get me wrong, I'm no programmer & I understand a most of games need a lot of time & money, But if all you've managed to produce at the end of the development cycle is some boring turd, don't expect us to still pay £40-£50 for the privilege of finding out. It hurts the industry far more than piracy or "gamestop".
I've got a fine collection of original games on many platforms, and virtually every one of them i pirated first.
I may be a pirate but I 'aint no guinea pig.
P.S. Don't get me started on DLC....
