Steam releases incredible numbers for 2011 |

2011 had some of the best games anyone had seen since 2007 and it looks like a big part of that was because of two big content delivery systems. One who has been around for quite some time and the other a big company who was watching from on high as the old King rounded up villagers with good prices and proper support.
I'm of course talking about Steam and Origin and how Origin barely made a dent in Steam's numbers this year. Steam currently has over 5 million people playing their games with an average of 4 million playing at any one time. 40 million accounts are actually registered with Steam and even with 1/10th of those playing concurrently it shows how big a system model you would need to allow for a big content service.
So a few quick statistics:
1800 games now exist on Steam with over 400 of those on the Steamworks list.
40 million accounts are officially registered.
Year-on-year sales (from 2010-2011) increased by over 100% and this isnt rare, this has been happening for the past seven years.
The servers really showed their chops with over 780 petabytes of data sent to users during 2011. This was twice the amount from 2010.
Over 14.5 million Steamworks games were registered. This was 67% up from 2010 and is a huge deal for Valve. Their community/cloud/achievement stuff is now becoming the template for which all PC gaming is stemming from.
Over 19 million in-game items were traded. Remember only two games (Portal 2 and TF2) allow this at the moment.
So a lot of numbers and a lot of money for Valve to sum it up.
With their big cross-platform release of Portal 2, the game shattered industry standards and critical reception with a promise at E3 that Gabe was going to develop for the PS3 and do it properly. He kept that promise and it looked like it paid off incredibly well. The Steamworks and even with TF2 going free, the microtransactions through hats apparently brought in over a million dollars in it's first month.
Valve have shown that great customer service, proper care of properties and an intelligent business model (and a huge fanbase), can really put you ahead of everyone else. While they may have had a bumpy road initially, I feel like Valve are in their prime at the moment and either 2012 gets them to make a big step forward or it could all come crumbling down. The main point is for Valve to keep doing what they are doing.
