There's gonna be a new demo type format from Steam, and presumably, we're gonna be seeing it either on Team Fortress 2 or an all of Steam's games. Robin Walker, Valve developer, explains the new system and discloses that "It's getting close to being releasable in a beta form."

Here's how it goes. After players die, or say for example, finish a round that you think you aced and would like to show off to friends, you can actually request from the server to send you a demo copy of it.

The server then sends you a demo that it recorded, which has the complete game state instead of just what your client saw, and it's in a format that's robust and won't break as easily when we update the game. In addition, the format has a some side benefits, like supporting full backwards and forwards time scrubbing.

Sounds cool, and actually responsive to the issue of players breaking their demo files after they've downloaded new updates.
