Steam Gets Knocked Offline

Gabe announced earlier that some hacks last year may have compromised old data, yesterday a Konami building had a lot of steam (misinterpreted as smoke) coming from it, and today Steam got knocked out with a power outage at their main data centre. Valvesoftware.com, steampowered.com and effectively all usage of the Steam client are affected by the outage, which lasted 80 minutes.

Valve said via Twitter and the Steam forums that the power is back on and that they’re working to get service restored as soon as possible. And they apologize for inconvenience caused.

It’s interesting to know that a secure major service like Steam still relies on a single centre with no backup plans in place. Let’s just hope this doesn't happen again.

Valve have said they’re investigating the reported outages. So don’t worry if you can’t access Steam, you’re account isn’t compromised; it’s just a power outage.

you cant go without 80 minutes of a power outage? could still play the fucking games and you're over here saying "it better not happen again" like its a 9/11 thing.

you cant expect everything to be running perfectly 24/7. if it was weeks, ok i can see that. 80 minutes ain't shit compared to what could have been.

I didn't write 'it better not happen again'. I wrote that we should 'hope' it doesn't happen again, which is a perfectly rational hope. Of course we should hope it doesn't happen again.

As for 'you can't go 80 minutes', I rarely use Steam but I thought it would be nice to keep QJ readers updated so they know there's server issues before trying to log in.

Also, 'it better not happen again' seems pretty small and demeaning to say about "a 9/11 thing".

I use steam every day, this was more a problem for Valve then the customers. As I was completely unaffected by Valves problems. I had zero problems gaming online with Steam yesterday. Sure it may have been a minor inconvenience for those wanting access to the store, but gaming wise I had no problems getting online to play my games.
