Square Enix opening studio in Canda? |
Listed in: News, Rumors Tags: Square Enix
Canadian newspaper lapresseaffaires is reporting that Square Enix is looking around Canada to set up shop. Could there be any truth to this?
According to the paper, it should be, if subsidiary Eidos Montreal's meetings with the Canadian government is any indication. Reportedly, Eidos Montreal director Stehpane d'Astous is in discussion with the government to be granted tax incentives.

Eidos Montreal would be the only Square Enix studio currently residing in Canada. It is also furthered that they're looking at Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal for the prospective location of their new studio.
Originally, Square Enix was said to be making their pick from among Orlando, Atlanta and Raleigh in mainland US, but has since changed their minds and is now opting for Canada instead.
As it stands, more developers are putting up shop in Montreal, so if they are to follow that trend then it would probably be most likely that Square Enix will be opening their new studio there. This, on top of the fact that they already have Eidos in the area.
There's still no final decision on the matter, but if all goes well, then one should be reached, and subsequently announced, come May.

Anyways, there are quite a few amazing studios in Canada as it is. With the Ubisoft Montreal team behind stuff like Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia and Bioware behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age... you've got some mammoth hitters coming out of Canadian devs. Now Square-Enix owned Eidos, also has a Canadian branch which is working on Deus EX
