Square Enix Offers up Free, Ad-Driven Games |

Here’s an interesting thing that happened: Square Enix, known far and wide as the company that puts insane prices on its mobile games, is finally giving a little something back to its passionate community in the form of free games.
Well, sort of.

Square Enix just launched a new service called “Core Online.” Core Online allows you to play some of Square Enix’s games right through your web browser—even if your computer ranks extremely low on the hardware capability front. For now, Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninjas are the only two games are available, but Square Enix plans to expand the selection rapidly. Look for Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light along with Tomb Raider: Underworld to show up soon, along with other Square Enix favorites.
But here’s the snag: In order to play the games, you have to watch advertisements. According to the Core Online FAQ, watching a 1-minute ad gives you 20 minutes of gameplay. Though this screenshot does beg to differ:

When you run out of time, your game will pause and you’ll be asked to watch new ads. You can pre-load your game time by watching up to six ads in a row (60 minutes of gameplay total), or skip over the whole thing entirely by buying the game.
