Sorry NY Sex Offenders: No More Online Gaming for You

It looks as if a whole bunch of sex offenders in New York have more to worry about than just shame, as their online gaming privileges have just been revoked thanks to Operation: Game Over.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced today via his website that 2,100 registered sex offenders in the state of New York have just been removed from online gaming platforms as part of Operation: Game Over. This is not the first time the initiative has been put into play, as over 3,500 sex offenders in New York were removed from online gaming platforms earlier this year.
A total of five gaming companies helped the state of New York with the operation, including Funcom, Gaia Online, NCSoft, THQ, and one unnamed organization. Other companies who have agreed to help with removing sex offenders from their platforms in the past include Apple, Blizzard Entertainment, Disney Interactive, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Sony, and Warner Bros.
Operation: Game Over used New York’s Electronic Securing and Targeting of Online Predators Act, or e-STOP, to help identify the offenders for removal. Under the act, convicted sex offenders are required to register any email addresses, screen names, etc. to prevent access to certain online networks. Scheiderman commented on the latest operation with this statement: “The Internet is the crime scene of the 21st century, and we must ensure that online video game platforms do not become a digital playground for dangerous predators. That means doing everything possible to block sex offenders from using gaming systems as a vehicle to prey on underage victims.”
What do you think about the move?
