ShootMania: The Customisable FPS

Nadeo, the creators of Trackmania, have been working on an FPS title. No nothing like your Call of Battle: Field Day 3, the game would be a tool to help budding game designers to make their own first person shooter levels. A fully customisable and original experience, designed by you, the gamer.

Speaking over at Digital Day in London, Ubisoft revealed through their group marketing manager Thomast Paincon (who has the best name for an FPS Convention), that they plan on using the user created content from Shootmania to something called the ManiaPlanet Portal.

Now for those of you who haven't played TrackMania, go do it. Go play the second one that was just released, it's not that expensive and it is like the Minecraft of racing games, except it looks and plays a whole lot better and is user-friendly. Paincon has said that it will give total "freedom to the FPS community" to create their "own games and levels"

At the moment, ManiaPlanet is just Trackmania 2 Canyon and Ubisoft - especially Paincon - sees potential in creating a franchise. At the moment however, Paincon notes, Shootmania is a concept that will be developed into 2012. But apparently they plan on going a microtransaction route, by linking things on ManiaPlanet, creating a track in Trackmania 2 then earning money from it to get new building blocks for Shootmania, where you can create a level which you could then get money from and do something in QuestMania (which is their next custom-RPG game creation).

Paincon refers to it as an environment with a long term vision, much like Ubisoft's other online titles. What I didn't know is that the developers over at Nadeo, are actually a 25 man team mainly made up of engineers, who just make the tools, without focusing on level design or anything.

In the same interview with Games Industry, Paincon explained that with new online gaming there is no room for a single shot title with games any more. They need to be crafted and time must continue to be spent on them, which may mean more well-crafted and adapted titles or a lot more broader - but focused- creations from big gaming companies.
