Sega shoots down Streets of Rage Remake |

Fan projects are risky propositions. A team can spend years working on a game for free only to be given a cease and desist order by the copyright holder just when it was close to being finished.
That didn't happen to the fan-made Streets of Rage remake. It actually got finished and was released for free on PC last week. Sega didn't seem to like the fact that Bomber Games, the team behind the remake, actually managed to finish it, though.
"Sega has contacted us regarding the download hosted on this site," Bomber Games founder charco posted on the mod team's official forums. The team has taken down the download and has asked other not to upload and mirror the remake anywhere else. The team reportedly told Sega about the project years ago, but the company only saw fit to shut it down after it was released.
Bomber Games describes Streets of Rage Remake as "a project created from scratch, it does not use reverse engineering nor a single line of code from the original games. It’s all based on visual interpretation, comparing how things work in the original games and trying to mimic it for Streets of Rage Remake."
Streets of Rage Remake took eight years and 80,000 lines of original code to finish. The remake connected the plot threads that ran throughout the three Streets of Rage games that Sega released on the Genesis / Mega Drive.

Also makes me wonder why they've gone after this and not the many Sonic fangames such as Sonic Robo Blast 2 or Time Attacked...

I encourage anyone who has the space to mirror. Keep this alive and maybe (highly doubtful) SEGA will understand that if fans like the game enough to make THEIR OWN FUCKING remake, then maybe there is enough support that people would actually pay for an official remake, not some Virtual Console re-release.

Let's hope the other SEGA franchise remake can be finished.
