Fan projects are risky propositions. A team can spend years working on a game for free only to be given a cease and desist order by the copyright holder just when it was close to being finished.

That didn't happen to the fan-made Streets of Rage remake. It actually got finished and was released for free on PC last week. Sega didn't seem to like the fact that Bomber Games, the team behind the remake, actually managed to finish it, though.

"Sega has contacted us regarding the download hosted on this site," Bomber Games founder charco posted on the mod team's official forums. The team has taken down the download and has asked other not to upload and mirror the remake anywhere else. The team reportedly told Sega about the project years ago, but the company only saw fit to shut it down after it was released.

Bomber Games describes Streets of Rage Remake as "a project created from scratch, it does not use reverse engineering nor a single line of code from the original games. It’s all based on visual interpretation, comparing how things work in the original games and trying to mimic it for Streets of Rage Remake."

Streets of Rage Remake took eight years and 80,000 lines of original code to finish. The remake connected the plot threads that ran throughout the three Streets of Rage games that Sega released on the Genesis / Mega Drive.

It's less of a dick move than when SE killed that near-complete Chrono Trigger fan project but it's still disappointing.

It's stupid, because I've got the remake on my computer and am really enjoying it. Sega must realise now it's been released there is NO WAY people aren't just going to find another way to get this brilliant project.

Also makes me wonder why they've gone after this and not the many Sonic fangames such as Sonic Robo Blast 2 or Time Attacked...

My opinion of SEGA has been in a perpetual free fall since the Dreamcast folded. They rarely produce quality work anymore and they get mad when someone shows them how to get it done. Sorry SEGA, I was your biggest fanboy with the Genesis, but you guys flat out suck now. I'd even to as far as to say that THQ is better.

thanks to fileserve ive managed to pick this game up, and from the looks of things, its amazing and packed with features. if only game companies saw what games we really wanted, instead of shovelware and saturated FPS's.

I downloaded it too. Its actually pretty good. I'm going to work on getting it to work with my 360 controller. (I haven't looked for the option yet so maybe it is easier than I imagine.)

I encourage anyone who has the space to mirror. Keep this alive and maybe (highly doubtful) SEGA will understand that if fans like the game enough to make THEIR OWN FUCKING remake, then maybe there is enough support that people would actually pay for an official remake, not some Virtual Console re-release.

This sucks. They are not mad about their IP, they are mad because someone did a better job.

Let's hope the other SEGA franchise remake can be finished.

Yes you R perfectly correct my son!

Its always the same with these cretinous companies. They try to sell us SHIT and when someone else offers STH better for FREE they are ashamed of themselves...and always use the LAW and RIGHTS as an excuse for their imcompetency...just look at SONY! 8)
ALSO...
3D SONIC (& 4)is a pile of PooP too.... although the FAN remake (SONIC 2D) that is (I hope) still in production looks Freakin' Great!! I've played the 2 stage DEMO.
