We’ve seen some pretty big Kickstarter projects over the last few months. Millions of dollars have flowed in from all over the world to sponsor RPGs, side-scrollers and RTS’s, and there’s no indication things will slow down any time soon.

Take, for example, Obsidian’s Project Eternity. The game has amassed a record $3.99 million, from an astounding 73,986 donors. This makes Project Eternity the biggest game-related project Kickstarter has ever seen, and should be plenty for the Obsidian team to get their game made and distributed.

One interesting thing about this new record: Project Eternity is a game for a specific niche of gamers. Project Director Josh Sawyer went on the record as believing the new trend in game development will likely be catering to specific gamers, rather than making the most broadly appealing title possible. If the numbers behind his project are any indication, he’s on the right track.

Anyone here donate to the Project Eternity Kickstarter? What are you hoping to see in the game?

No, and after hearing that bs about niche markets being where it's at for new games I definitely will not be supporting them. Sony had the same opinion with the ps3 and the direction they have been going with games for there system. Just goes to show not every game developer is capable of making a good game that can be enjoyed by millions rather then thousands these days. Niche markets are a terrible idea for game development, why limit your audience. Great game developers are the ones who are able to create amazing games that every one can enjoy.

I donated as soon as the kickstarted began. Having played most games built on the infinity engine (baldur's gate for exemple), it was excited to see Obsidian starting a rpg projet with the mindset of reviving the old school rpg genre based on how games using infinity were. So i can expect a hardcore rpg with lots of elements. The people of Obsidian were very generous with the information during the kickstarter so i know pretty much what to expect :) Its a long way till product delivery, but it will be worth the wait!

That's a crap load of money. I looked at the kickstarter page and saw close to nothing about the game itself aside from "talk". So basically people backed the developer more than the game. That says a lot!

Good for them.
