Origin gets 5 million players a day |

I try and be optimistic, I try and be as little a skeptic as I can when I hear claims about things on the internet and especially when it comes to statistics. They say 90% of all statistics are made up on the spot and I think that most people who follow PR firms and direct news wires from game companies are just being fed those statistics on a daily basis, so let's just see what EA had to say about their new service.
EA COO Peter Moore was at the EB Expo, basically Australia trying to have a video game convention and it being actually alright from the reports I heard. Moore spoke to Australian newspaper the Sydney Morning Herald about the launch and had this to say, " like any piece of software and I worked at Microsoft for enough years to say this, you launch software and continue to polish it, upgrade it, get feedback and make it better".
When regarding the competition of Steam, Moore said: "I think in its broadest sense they think it is just EA's answer to Steam, and it is much more than that. Like any great content provider, you want to provide yourself with a platform to talk directly with your customers... That's exactly what Origin is all about." The plans to expand the Origin service into a social network, Moore was more than enthused to answer yes. The importance of platforms of Origin and Zynga's upcoming try, is that their usership may be in the millions, but remember this is in comparison to Steam's 2-3 million. The chances of having more than that (like say 5 million) are slim, but not impossible...except in Zynga's case, they basically have a gaming usership the population of Australia.
The reason companies like EA say this early on is that sadly through trial and error in the games industry, the three things that are required for a proper launch is an audience, a good opening line up and hype. Of course, the last one is not always necessary, but it's this recursive fashion that you'll gain an audience from the hype to buy the lineup who will then hype the machine for the rest of eternity and fork out more money...let's hope EA know this formula...
