Oh brother: SecuROM in C&C Kane's Wrath patch v1.01 stalls on right-click, EA releases fix - Image 1

Yet again Electronic Arts has to settle with the consequences of running strict digital rights management (DRM) software with its computer games. It appears that the constant complaints of SecuROM crashing legitimate users' PCs has hit a sound note with the publisher.

EA Support has just posted a fix for the Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath patch version 1.01, which if not fixed will make sure Windows Explorer stalls when you right-click any executable file.

Yes - any. We have heard reports through discussions that the new patch comes with a security fix for SecuROM, and upon patching, it renders the right-click mechanic of Windows into the equivalent of depressing the big red flashing button that says, "Nuke me and my ancestry."

For the record, all news on SecuROM hasn't exactly been bump-free - BioShock, Mass Effect, Alone in the Dark, and Spore and what-have-yous are all collecting minimal sales simply because no one wants a hidden, persistent, and now purposely intrusive DRM lurking in the Windows kernel. I mean, I wouldn't either.

Electronic Arts has posted a step-by-step process on the source link below on how to resolve the crash, but if other people's opinion would have it, the real problem is still on your hard drive.

» SROP WITH THE COPY PROTECTION!

The only people it inconveniences are everyone.

FACT: Every copy protection including securom has been broken. pirates know how to play this game with or without your copy protection. IT DOESNT WORK! you would actually make more money if you didnt use copy protection because you wouldnt have to license it. copy protection doesnt stop pirates it just annoys every day users. this is a fact.

FICTION: If they dont have copy protection on games they will not make any money because everyone will merely pirate it. this si incorrect, they will make around the same amount. most regular people dont pirate games. most games if good will sell well with or without copy protection.

» You hit the nail on the head.

If only EA could finally get rid of all those annoying customers. Always buying the product and then complaining when EA punishes them for nothing. Things would be so much better without these whiney customers paying for everything!
