Two days ago, I wouldn't believe you if you told me people would be willing to pay a million dollars for a new adventure game in 2012. I had thought Adventure games were just for people like Telltale or for people who are really good at GameMaker, but Tim Schafer proved us all happily wrong.

But it seems that other people, such as a pretty cool guy named Chris Avellone who helped create Neverwinter Nights 2, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout New Vegas and the somewhat underrated and forgotten gem, Planescape Torment. Mr. Avellone was on the Twitters and said that "Hmmmm. I admit, I've got Kickstarter fever now...I feel like a bunch of doors suddenly appeared in game development"

Mr. Avellone then made a forum post over at Obsidian and began to talk to people all over the world about the possibility of a sequel to one of his or Obsidian's games and Planescape 2, no doubt, came up. Now the reality of the situation is, which Tim Schafer pointed out, Psychonauts 2, if made today would cost, $20 million to make. There isn't a month going by in the rest of this year without Kickstarter being kicked around game studio offices and with the Double Fine project almost at $2 mil, $20 million in a year can't be too difficult with the right buzz.

Chris Avellone said about a Kickstarter funded game from Obsidian "The idea of player-supported funding is... well, it's proof certain genres aren't dead and sequel may have more legs than they seem. And the idea of not having to argue that with a publisher is appealing." While some may criticise the approach of Kickstarter, it fixes a big problem in terms of marketing and convincing a producer that people will buy the game and it will be profitable.

Presales alone for Double Fine have proved how many people still want Adventure Games and are willing to fork out over $100 just to play it (as well as a few other goodies). Avellone said that out of curiosity, if Obsidian did Kickstart a project, what would you want to see funded?" You can always contact Chris Avellone on Twitter @Chris Avellone or on the Obsidian forums right now and help make history.

You should have included a link to the forum in your post, instead making people surf the internet for the website address too forum. Next time make sure you include the whole story not just part of it. A link to the website where Mr. Avellone is doing this is a imprtant part of the story that you chose to leave out. Hard to choose whether to support this guy when you don't know his website address.

Never heard of it, but I totally enjoyed the video on the kickstarter website. They almost tripled their goal.

I had a feeling something like this would happen after the massive success of Double Fine Adventure.

I see it as a great boon for games that otherwise would never get funded but have massive fans..... problem is I am worried if this will get abused and everyone and their grandmother will start trying this, saturating kickstarter with such projects.
