New Study Shows Weak Retention for Social Games |

Social gaming, according to people who work in social gaming, is the future of the games industry. Some of the titans of the genre pull in millions of players every day, and assumedly those players represent millions of dollars in profit as well. But there’s one small catch the social games publishers may have forgotten to mention: People quit social games at a staggering rate.

Playnomics, a social games analyst firm, has conducted a survey lasting from July to September that focused on the gaming habits of players working from its PlayRM platform. According to the data they’ve collected, around 85% of all new players abandon a social game in less than 24 hours. If you stretch the timeframe out to a month, most social games lose 95% of the people that swung by for a look.
Playnomics has noted that it’s somewhat possible to spot the players who will stick around—they show stronger involvement early on and give off other indicators of interest. Thus, the company has come up with something that you’d think would be common sense: Wrapping players up in social gameplay requires strong pushes for early retention. In other words: Hook ‘em young.
What do you think? Do social games keep your interest, or are you quick to abandon ship?
