Modern Warfare 3 will recycle MW2's engine

It's pretty reasonable to assume that Infinity Ward will be stepping up their game in creating Modern Warfare 3, and we're pretty sure they will. But if you're thinking they'll be using a new game engine to whip out some flashier tech and graphics for the third installation of their mega-hit series, then you thought wrong.

mw2_resurgence

Creative Strategist Robert Bowling explained that the dev team will be using the engine they tapped for Modern Warfare 2. According to him, this is because the devs find it more "counter-productive" if they create a new engine for MW3.

"An engine takes years and years to develop and get right," he said. Therefore, from that statement alone, it's probably safe to assume that the MW2 engine will be used a bit more longer, while the new one isn't made yet.

I can't help but wonder what kind of Modern Warfare the remaining people in Infinity Ward will produce without their former teammates.

modern warfare used to be soooo big. infinity ward's been deeply affected by the departure of west and zampella much more than they would ever dare let on.

does it mater, there are millions of games being made on the same game engines. as long as they don't disappoint with the story like I feel MW2 did it will be a great game.

I will miss this one in the series out though, uncharted 3 is where I will be at.

Let's hope they learned something from Treyarch dood, MW2 was way too arcade-like, BUT IT STILL LOOKS BETTER THAN BLACK OPS DOOD!

I liked the arcade feel of MW2. It was like, "yeah, we know our game is ridiculously OTT... that's just how we roll."

It was really fun, and the borderline cartoon-style of it was all a part of its charm. Then BO came alone, and it was like Michael Bay had raped it in every way imaginable. Don't get me wrong, there are some cool new features, but I never bothered picking the game up because it just wasn't that great.

IW 4.0 was developed on top of the COD4 engine, so they are basically the same engine.

All this engine talk is funny, because the COD4 engine was actually just a modification of the Quake 3 engine.

in terms of graphics, Battlefield 3 will pwn Modern Warfare 3's graphics.

but MW3's story should be interesting, and i haven't played a single Battlefield title but it sure looks fun.

It's not like that staff even made the engine. I can see why they would say that. Making a new engine would feel like a different call of duty game. Only a few more years til that engine gets outdated and the 12 year olds will cry that the graphics suck. Might as well milk the cow dry.

Treyarch simply does not have the talent to create engines. Treyarch was always the B team and IW always the A-Team. Now both IW and Treyarch are the B teams...

That being said, Treyarch is just a glorified mod team. Nothing more.

To be fair, the original COD4 engine wasn't exactly an original engine, either, though granted it was a pretty heavy modification.

MW2 was just an updated version of the MW1 engine. It was a big update (like the orange box update for the source engine), but it's still the same.

So they're copying and pasting the biggest flaw from MW2...

MW1 and W@W had great mechanics, but MW2 was clunky in comparison. I haven't had the chance to try Black Ops yet, though.

MW3 won't be the same without the talent of West, Zampella, and other important devs that defected from the original IW studio team.

MW3 will probably be a rushed game with inferior quality versus MW2 and it will just serve to rake in the big bucks.

dont ever use "call of duty" and "a great game" in the same sentence. unless they are separated by the word "isn't"

btw, black ops sucked. so did MW2.

I don't know why people bitch about Call of Duty... Chances are, they'll be buying the game anyway. CoD4 was great, and MW2 was good. I do agree that Battlefield 3 will be better graphics wise, and will definitely be more realistic. However, CoD isn't the same; CoD is an "arcade" style shooter, they're not aiming for realism.

I'm fine with them sticking to the MW2 engine.

I say do whatever they think suits them best. Just hire some better map designers... Thats my only complaint. All the maps were to linear and easily tubed on. ahem...

Search and destroy.. Defen.. BOOM...
-killed by fag tube-

see that whole fight in afghan is one thing... but when the attacking team can rush the A bomb plant have it planted and keep the defending team pinned with tubes while the others spread out to defend the bomb... its a bit bullshit... my complaint with infinity ward...

my complaint with treyarch... Flak Jacket... it didnt matter what you dropped on them fags they wont die then they will have last stand pro where your explosives STILL wont kill them. Bullshit...

I think battlefield will take their rightful place on the top this go around.

# My opinionBlackEagle04 2011-04-24 04:26
I really think that the IW 3.0 engine has been overused. I don't mean that Black Ops's Graphics sucks but... in terms of gameplay I enjoyed both Modern warfare 2 and black ops. Treyarch did a pretty good job balancing game play elements (although there are some flaws). I also bought Battlefield Bad Company 2 and I thin they are pretty different. Cod has been always arcade style, Battelfield on the other hand, is more teamwork oriented.
I think that modern Warfare 3 will be a decent game (I know that the IW 4.0 has already been used but just once). Plus both Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software are helping what's left of IW developing MW3. But I think that Battelfield 3 will take It's throne. I'll buy both Mw3 and BF3 when they come out and then I'll judge. :D

Stop taking fps so seriously. Neither battlefield or call of duty are going to have some bad ass storyline and neither are going to reinvent or come out with some crazy new element that we have yet to see in the fps army genre. Neither game requires much skill so buy whichever is better suited for you. Battlefield is more methodical while COD is more pick up and play fun.

Neither of those games are even about single player... They're both online-oriented games. I could give a flying fuck about story lines.

This is why CoD fails as a shooter in my opinion.

1. It is made by two developers(IW & Treyarch) that don't give a damn about the fans of the series anymore.

2. It's made with one of the most outdated game engines that is full of holes and limitations.

3. It is published by Activision (the biggest bunch of two faced jerks in the gaming industry)

And...
4. It's a crappy arcade fps. Not trying to rag on the genre) but there are ways to make a good fps (ex DOOM, Wolfenstein, 007 Goldeneye, CoD4) and then there are ways to f*€k it all to hell like with MW2 and Black Ops(the worst Call of Duty game ever in my view).

This is why I have lost all faith in the CoD series and why I am buying Battlefield 3 the first chance I get.
