After announcing the new matchmaking service that Infinity Ward will be putting up in lieu of Modern Warfare 2's dedicated servers, we now have some more in-depth detail regarding this new service. Robert Bowling, aka fourzerotwo, provides us with the deets.

The IWNET, as the new backend infrastructure is called, will mean no more browsing through a Server List for a server with the settings/ ping you want among other things. Said Bowling:

The news...[led] to many more questions than answers as to 'HOW' this would work, and if it would really be better for the PC community as a whole. Questions, assumptions, and speculation I intend to dispel.

The new IWNET service promises four main things:

  • Matchmaking and Smoother Gameplay - Just select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) and the system will automatically find you a game with the best quality game for your optimal enjoyment.  It will even take into account the skill of the players you will be matched with for the game.
  • Playlists and Private Matches - Playlists, as mentioned above, are pre-set game modes and gametypes for public games. Private Matches are for when you want to, say, practice for an upcoming tournament. Here, you will have complete control over the rules: who can join, who you can kick out, tweak the entire game to your liking. You can  also invite the other team or just start it with your own clan. It's customized games at its finest.
  • Party System and Friendslist - The Friendslist lets you easily see which of your friends are online so you can invite them to join your Party. The Party allows you to move from game to game as a group. It is also highly recommended for clan matches.
  • Cheat / Hack Free Games - "The biggest benefit of using IWNET by far is the fact that you don't have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning and policing it.
Are you liking what you're seeing thus far? Over at fourzerotwo's official blog, the readers are making it clear and known that they are not buying it - just as Infinity Ward has made it clear and known that they will not be listening to your petitions for a dedicated server by shutting down petitions.

As one commenter succinctly puts it: "I want to meet these mythical creatures who have difficulty navigating a server browser." Others point out that the new system to be implemented reeks of console features and does not fit the PC.

What do you guys think? Is this an acceptable bone thrown your way or canceling your pre-orders definitely is now on top of your To-Do list for today?

» sigh

as a former pc gamer, that is friggin' BS. the number one thing i hate about call of duty on ps3 is the lack of a server browser. what if i want to play a specific map? then i have to keep joining games, until i get that one. what happens to the zombie mod servers? what about the 24/7 shipment servers we are all so fond of? the worse thing a company can do is take away the choices of the consumer.

» canceling pre-orders is the answer

canceling pre-orders and giving them bad rat

guys this isnt gona work just bcz a clan in russia cant play with a IWNET server in UK or germany wasted band with ,

We will have a limited Players location also M$ said Xboxlive servers cost money so how IW wil keep this free ...

coutries who will be afected

1 - Countries with no m$ licences

2 - Many europian Countries and whole africa

3 - many asian players will see a good 1000 ping so no more COD

but no me and 6 of my friends canceled our orders and many players over the world said that they will noy buy it , you may help too to bring it back by posting a advise on your profile or blog .

» Uh

Why would console players cancel their pre-orders? They dont benefit from dedicated servers.

Also, I have no idea what your 1. point even means, considering this has nothing to do with Microsoft.

Again, all canceling your pre-order will do is give them less reason to listen to you. The console version of the original MW sold over 11 million copies, I dont think Activision (Yes, you know, the company that owns IW and decides when they eat, sleep and take a whizz.) will cry too hard if they lose out on a couple hundred thousand sales (and save money on having to support that third lesser demographic.)

» Hmm...

I think alot of people are gonna suffer with the dedi's as they are always based in UK, US or NL. But if everyone moved to fibre optic broadband, you would get good pings like me But terrible download rates. So my internet gets me to places on time but can't take a suitcase.

» yes but

Im not again IW or activision , i love how IW designers made the MW1 but they they dont care about comercial things no im sure they are again IWNET bcz most IW team are mooders and they know that this system will kill creativity for money yes ( hosting a server in IWNET ) thats will not be free and can not be free , so let give designers of COD MW2 reason to defend their Game .
