Earlier this month, Minecraft mastermind Notch announced that the next update, beta 1.7, would be an "adventure update" that will "flesh out the game a bit, making it reward exploration and combat more." That's not happening anymore.

Notch today revealed on his blog that only pistons and "probably a couple of bug fixes" will be included in 1.7 instead. The good news is that since it now comes with less features, update 1.7 will be released "soon". The adventure update will be released as beta 1.8, but Notch doesn't have a timeframe for that one yet.

"Me and Jens have been independently working on stuff for the adventure update, and it’s been growing in scope as we’ve been working on it," the dev explains. "That means it will take quite some time to finish, but that it will hopefully change the game a lot to the better. To prevent going too far between updates, we’ve decided to release Pistons early."

After 1.8 arrives, players can look forward to Minecraft's full release sometime after the week of November 11th.

No no no. Adventure update was going to take awhile anyway, we already knew that. Notch just decided we'd like the pistons now to hold us over since they're done and we REALLY want them. So yeah, nothings being scaled back, we're just getting pistons sooner.

I much prefer less-frequent updates until there's a solid mod framework down. Because, while updates are great, I prefer not have to go and reapply all the mods (more like hacks) and hi-res texture packs that I have installed, and then I have to wait for a new version of Bukkit to come out before my me and my friends can even play on our own server.
