Perhaps the most easily recognizable feature of the Max Payne games is their usage of the bullet time mechanic. When activated, it slows down time and lets players target eneimes more accurately and execute a few flashy moves to boot.

It'll be showing up in Max Payne 3, of course. Just like how video game graphics have leapt forward in the time since Max Payne 2: The Fal of Max Payne came out in 2003, the bullet time mechanic will be getting a serious overhaul in the series' latest entry.

Speaking to gaming news site IGN, Max Payne 3's art director, Rob Nelson, explained that leveraging the RAGE engine, blended animations, and Natural Motion's Euphoria system have allowed the developers to add a level of sophistication and detail that befits a 2011 action game.

Thanks to these systems, Rockstar Vancouver has made Max able to "react to the world around him realistically, bracing for impact from a diving shoot-dodge or transferring his weight from foot-to-foot while in Bullet Time. The player has an amazing amount of control over the player when running and targeting."

Nelson also teased that they will introduce additional features to the bullet time mechanic, some of which will be revealed soon. Max Payne 3 is currently set for release next year.
