Massive Social Games predicted in 2012 |

Exent, a big social game-on-demand company has said that the current online social gaming industry is too crowded and too many games are flooding the market trying to cash in. One of their executives has gone on the record saying there will be "massive layoffs" next year. There have been many people already calling out it's doom. Squenix say it's the future, PopCap saying it's over and game designer Scott Jon Siegel has said that game designers need to embrace the potential of the social arena to create - and I quote - the unanticipated golden poo.
Adding to the doomsayers is Rick Marazzani, Exent executive who has said that there will be deep cuts for deep-pocketed studios. Marazzani has said that with many hit games and big marketing budgets many companies need a lot of money just to "stay afloat at the top of the Facebook game charts." But Marazzani says the problem goes deeper as companies don't want to face the reality of an over saturated genre.
"Faced with the reality that there are too many people working on too many games for the market to bear, social developers will be forced to place smarter and fewer bets as user acquisition cost and competition grows," in his interview with Develop. He also added that Zoo World developer, RockYou, laid off 55 of it's employee's last month, which is about 40% of their staff.
The future is probably social gaming, but someone needs to break the mould or otherwise it will all get too stale, even for the most casual of gamers.
