Kixeye: You can't do game design through just data |

A lot of companies rely on data testing and following trends to not see what could really be done with games. That's a part of Will Harbin's philosophy on the problem with games as he says that creativity should be the primary motivator for innovative game development. Harbin spoke with GamesIndustry.Biz saying that while data can prove to be a valuable tool for fine tuning a title, true creativity relies on instinct and passion.
Harbin said that game developers need a better outlook as "data does not inform our road map. I mean, it's only us as gamers that informs our road-map. What we do with data is we try to enhance the gaming experience. So for example when you have a lot of people who, let's say, complain in user forums about a new feature that you've launched, well the data might be saying that these guys are spending hours on this feature and it's causing them to come back to the game at an increased rate."
Harbin basically talks about user data as a way of monitoring your user input but it should not dictate it. Harbin says it can ignore the "vocal minority from the overall user base," to provide an example would be those who wanted to boycott Modern Warfare 2, but instead Activision listened to the majority who ended up making them billions, which sure helps the company but lacks any innovation which for anyone who played MW3 saw.
Harbin said about his work at Kixeye that they "do not design [their] games around date." They try to make improvements around data but sees guys who rely too much on data, such as Zynga and Playdom, as lacking in game design and creativity. He said on Playdom that they are "essentially just a Zynga rip off." Harbin added that it's not exactly a "super creative approach to gaming." Harbin says that it's a good idea to focus on the core gamer which should be key than making a quick buck with social gamers. They are often not good at establishing a fanbase as they are often fickle but more importantly are hard to base a whole new series on due to a lack of interest.
Harbin's words will hopefully not go unheeded through the games industry. I think that some companies will see eye-to-eye with core gamers whilst others will feel neglected and go back to this or that franchise because of it's next game. That will hopefully innovate something in terms of gameplay or style such as Legend of Zelda Wind Waker or Resident Evil 4 or Super Mario Galaxy. You can still have classic franchises and create something new. Harbin's points on creativity are key in the games industry as they can be profitable, fun and innovative.
