The Doom franchise has become an institution when it comes to first person shooters, so fans are of course eagerly awaiting the next entry, Doom 4. Details on the upcoming shooter are still scarce but according to id Software design director Matt Hooper, longtime fans won't be disappointed when they finally get to see the game in action.

"It's going great. It's awesome," he told gaming news site Eurogamer. "They're [the Doom 4 team] going in their own direction. They're doing something Doom fans will be happy with."

"I try to support them as much as possible. It's a good thing. We're separated enough to be able to go our own ways, but still connected where we can help facilitate both those directions."

Hooper also assured fans that the game won't just be Rage with a different coating. Although it's neither a sequel to Doom 3 nor a reboot of the series, Doom 4 will have a distinctly different flavor.

"It is distinct enough," said Hooper. "It would be dangerous... We don't want to make a re-skinned Doom [with Rage] and then Doom 4 be a re-skinned Rage. That would be bad.

"It's worked out really nicely where we have enough connection to take advantage of things like technology and talent, but enough separation to be able to go in a unique direction."

Doom 4 has yet to be given a release window, although id has confirmed that it will see a simultaneous release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

I seem to recall they're ditching monster closets for this one. That alone is a pretty good improvement.

If only they could get back to their roots. I played Doom 17 years ago now, and still I and II are the best. If I had a proper mouse for my laptop, I'd still be playing Zdaemon at least once a week.

As long as it's more Doomish and not Doom3 ish then I'll be okay. I still love the shit out of Doom... but Doom3 had be bored in 20 mins.

I donno what game you think you played. But I remember Doom 3 for Xbox and it was a technical marvel, showed off not only what the Xbox was fully capable of, but also set the bar for the upcoming next-gen titles. The game looked and played amazing, and in my opinion was very fun.
