Mashing the food meter at the last minute to regain health is a common practice in Minecraft. Soon, however, players won't be able to do that. The next update is making food a more valuable resource with the addition of a hunger meter that only lets players regain health once it's maxed out.
The new hunger meter is just one of the many new things in Minecraft's next update. In addtion, the folks at Mojang confirmed to gaming news site IGN during PAX that quest-giving NPCs will show up in the update. Killing monsters will net players experience, but dying will lead to experience loss.
To help players' chances of survival, bows are getting a power-up. Players will be able to fire arrows farther by drawing them back longer. Holding arrows will affect you movement speed, but they will start to prove useful against the game's new and tougher enemies.
Speaking of enemies, spiders will be more dangerous as the update makes them poisonous. Mining will also become more hazardous thanks to the Silverfish enemies that live in the very blocks that players mine. And then there are the Endermen, who attack you if you so much as look at them. If you meet one, look for a pool as apparently they're vulnerable to water.
