Hi-Rez Studios is now getting ready to open the doors to its first entry in the Tribes franchise to thousands of hand-picked beta testers worldwide. The studio has announced that the Tribes: Ascend closed beta will be kicking off within the next few weeks.
The free-to-play multiplayer-only shooter's initial beta phase will feature four multiplayer maps, two game modes, and three vehicles. Players will be able to pick from 12 different playable classes and take part in multiplayer matches of up to 32 people.
Those interested can apply for the first phase of the beta at www.tribesascend.com. Hi-Rez will be increasing the number of beta testers throughout the remaining months until Tribes: Ascend finally hits retail in the first quarter of 2012.
Tribes: Ascend will be the first new entry in the long-running Tribes franchise following its purchase by Hi-Rez. The developers are envisioning it as a "new generation of the online multiplayer shooter" while still staying true to classic elements like jetpacks, skiing, and strategic teamwork-based play. The beta should be the perfect opportunity for series fans to help judge whether or not Hi-Rez has succeeded in its vision.
