Guild Wars 2 Issues the Banhammer

The folks at ArenaNet have just about had enough of players taking advantage of an exploit in Guild Wars 2.  What have they done about the problem?  Issued account bans.  Permanent ones.

The exploit in question appeared during Guild Wars 2’s Wintersday holiday event.  According to VG 24/7, “the exploit allowed players to craft items using one ectoplasm – a rare ingredient – and then salvage them to receive two in return.”  The exploit supposedly caused a major drop in ectoplasm’s market price until ArenaNet stepped in to take control by issuing permanent account bans.

Of course, the bans resulted in many complaints from players on the game’s forums and other sites such as Reddit who claimed they were unaware of any such exploit.  Those complaints didn’t do much to garner sympathy from ArenaNet, however.  ArenaNet’s support liaison Gaile Gray wrote the following on the Guild Wars 2 forum in response to all of the complaints:

“Any time you take one thing and can make two, and then four, and then 16 – ya gotta know that’s just wrong.  And to perform that action hundreds and hundreds of times? That’s called exploitation, and that’s against the User Agreement, the Rules of Conduct, and all that is holy.”

Were you banned from Guild Wars 2?

I like how ANet gives zero shits about banned player complaints. They are setting a good standard for dealing with those who violate the rules.

I think the players knew what they were doing.

It is the responsibility of the game developer to assure a exploit/bug free game. Banning people because of something you are too lazy to patch not only makes you look like a tyrant, it eliminates your own user base. -phantasy star online private server project manager.
