Grats, You Broke It: BioWare Founders Left Because of Fan Vitriol

Remember that time everyone made fun of Mass Effect 3 for having a ridiculously bad ending? How about the time we all criticized Star Wars: The Old Republic for taking World of Warcraft and replacing everything in it with stuff from Star Wars? As it turns out, those complaints had a very real effect on BioWare co-founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka.

Trent Oster, who worked at BioWare through 2009 in “senior positions,” noted that at least one of the men seemed dejected and exhausted after the rough launch of the last two big titles.

“The last time I met up with [Greg], I felt his exhaustion. ‘Punch out, eject, get the hell out,’ was my suggestions to him and it hit closer to the mark than I had realized. I also think the Mass Effect 3 fan reaction and the Old Republic fans' negativity was just too much.”

"You have to love games and you put your heart into them to create them. To have the fans creating petitions against the work is pretty hard to take, especially when you've spent the last few years crunching overtime to try and ship a game. It can be hard to shut off the overwhelming negativity the internet spews forth, especially when it has your name or the name of your company in it.”

Oster did mention some surprise at Muzyka following suit, describing him as an “EA lifer.”

“I'm sure the internal culture at EA had pinned the Old Republic conversion to free to play as a failure and hung that completely on Ray, so that would have hurt his upward climb. But, I figured he would fight harder. EA upper management must have been even worse than I thought.”

Then again, it’s possible these two dudes were just ready to move on to something new. Thoughts?

People just do not appreciate people's work anymore. I feel bad for them both. And I better not hear "they brought this on themselves", the lot of you imbeciles caused them unnecessary distress.

well they kind of did brought it on themselves Mass Effect 3 had a bad ending and Star Wars the Old Republic was basically WoW in a Star Wars skin suit. So yeah they brought it on themselves

I've never played ME3 or SWTOR, but people have the right to complain if they don't like the game. They paid 60+ for a game, which I think is way over priced for most games. I played Diablo 3 since it came out, and about a month into the game it was impossible to progress through inferno. Thats when people complained on the forum and that's when things changed. If you are going to charge a premium for your game then you better deliver above average content.

To me they got their little egos bruised and they are to proud to own up to their mistakes, so they blame it on the fans who (directly or indirectly) is paying for their livelihood. If I get bad service/food at a restaurant, someone is going to hear about it.

U both have pretty valid views imo. After reading the comments I cant really tell whuch way to go w this. People are getting rediculous, and harder to please, but on the same note if ur paying top dollar for a game, well then u better get ur moolahs worth!

I think it was the cupcakes. :-|

Seriously though, I don't think they left because of the negative reaction towards their latest two games.

I think they're just saying this now to redirect the blame from EA onto the disappointed fans.

If it was really because of the "fans", it's still EA's fault for bad management, in my opinion.

EA is notorious for this kind of damage control. They blamed the poor sales of ME3 on a homophobic audience. IGN literally gets advance copies of all EA games before anyone else does and is pigeonholed into giving them positive media. Never trust anything that IGN has to say about EA because it is funded almost exclusively by their ads.

ME3 and OR weren't that bad to deserve the kind of hate the internet threw at Bioware. Hell, not even DAII was that, that bad.

Oster also said on twitter that it was inevitable for Muzyka and Zeschuck to leave EA because all EA does is monetization. "When you have creativeness and turn it into monetization, you're going to lose people".

EA's politics and strict deadlines have forced the tree last Bioware games to be failures: DA2, ME3 and TOR. It's only logical the doctors were sick of it.
