Gears of War - Image 1Probably one of the biggest announcements that came out of the recently-concluded E3 Media and Business Summit was Microsoft's confirmation of rumors that Gears of War will be released as a Games for Windows title.

Today we have some news regarding the game's online features. According to a video games news website CVG, Microsoft representatives have confirmed that the Games for Windows version of Gears of War will only be playable online through Games for Windows - Live. Gamers will have to sign up to the free service to enjoy the game's multiplayer modes.

CVG also noted that during E3, Microsoft revealed that Games for Windows - Live will also be made available for Windows XP. While there is no concrete date for this yet, it is expected to be implemented before the Christmas release of Gears of War's PC version.

» Like lambs to the slaughter.

Can you feel that?, Can you feel Microsoft ensnare you in those greasy tentacles?. Yes thats right, This is the beginning of the end.

First they get you using Live, Forcing it into your life... Slowly they will take away basic online features us PC gamers have enjoyed free for years.

Want them back?, Sure. Just Subscribe and get a Gold account. All they do is maintain a master server list but by god we should pay $50 a year for that.

» Ugh

While this is a free service I have to wonder how long before Microsoft cons everyone into paying for this. As it stands XBOX360 is the only console that makes you pay to get their console online.

I have a feeling they are forcing developers to use XBOX Live as well, since we're not seeing any free online services on the XBOX360.

How long before they force PC developpers to do the same thing???

Man, I hate Microsoft.

» you must

microsoft doesn't allow companies to connect there servers. they must have online via microsofts servers (XBOX Live) or no online at all. Sony on the otherhand allows any sever to connect so... yeah...

look, there are a lot of PC deveolopers that have refused to take part in LIVE. Gears for War was obviously going to be a GFWLive title because it was an xbox title and an xbox live game so it just makes sence. but look at games like C&C3 Stalker, UT3. those arn't LIVE games

yea it does suck that were losing some of the free multiplayer but live will be a lot easier to use in a lot of games. and the cross platform is worth it once more games take it up.

» Thats Great.

Please don't turn this into a Sony is awesome thing.

I could care less for either, As far as I'm concerned Microsoft is shafting xbox users and Sony has a worse online system but its free.

I'm talking from a PC gamer POV. Which is free and better in every way.
