GameStop set to buy Stardock's Impulse

In a move that that should expand their reach in the gaming distribution business, retailer GameStop revealed its plans to purchase Stardock subsidiary Impulse, Inc.

Reportedly, this acquisition will include the Impulse digital delivery service, and also streaming technology company Spawn Labs. It is seen as a sign that GameStop means serious business in crossing over to digital distribution. Earlier this year, back in January, GameStop started offering digitally distributed games for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP.

The acquisition is pretty much in the bag, although it won't oficially close till May of this year. What this should do, however, is to allow GameStop to step up the game and break Steam's dominance over the market. Currently, Valve controls about 70%, while Impulse of Stardock have about 10%.

Said GameStop CEO J.Paul Raines, "With theese important acquisitions, we will continue to make appropriate investments related to our multichannel stratgey. GameStop is uniquely positioned to be the leader in both the physical and digital gaming space."

Impulse subscribers need not worry about this acquisition because Stardock is promising that service will be continuous and not disrupted. The other good news about this is that Stardock says they're not expecting layoffs to happen in light of this transaction. In fact, they are looking to open up jobs for various positions.
