GameStop "regrets" Deus Ex: Human revolution OnLive coupon debacle |
Listed in: News Tags: deus ex: human revolution, GameStop, onlive, Square Enix

A few days ago we found out that GameStop had been tampering with the Deus Ex: Human Revolution copies that they had been selling. Publisher Square Enix and cloud streaming service OnLive were running a collaboration that bundled a free coupon for the game's OnLive version in the retail PC version's box, but apparently GameStop had been taking the coupons and tossing them out.
The whole debacle cast the retail giant in a negative light, and so now they're trying to at least do something for gamers who inadvertently missed out on the coupons. GameStop is now offering a US$ 50 gift card and a "buy 2 get 1 free" offer for pre-owned purchases. The store also sent out the following email to customers:
Dear GameStop customer,
Earlier this week, GameStop removed a competitor's coupon from standard edition PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a recent release by Square Enix. We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor's offer. We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.
For your inconvenience, we would like to offer you a free $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase. We want to earn back your trust and confidence in the GameStop experience. Please bring in this email and your store receipt or order confirmation from GameStop.com and present it to a Game Advisor.
Sincerely,
Paul Raines
CEO, GameStop
Soon after the reports came out, GameStop management admitted that they did pull and discard those coupons. GameStop rep Beth Sharum also specifically mentioned that "Square Enix packed the competitor's coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge".

You seemed aware enough to open up copies specifically to throw them away...
