Final Fantasy XIV Servers Merging

Final Fantasy XIV, also known as Final Fantasy: Online Disaster, is entering its second troubled year. And while Square Enix seems to have good feelings about the future of the game – good enough, at least, to charge a subscription fee – that doesn't necessarily mean players are taking the bait.

The game has been hemorrhaging players for months, and Square is now looking to consolidate some of the more barren servers to bring players together and make maintenance a little easier. They’re dropping the total number of servers from 18 to 10 on March 27th, merging many of the less populated servers into larger ones.

You can transfer to any server you want between March 1st and March 19th, but if you forget to get that done Square Enix will choose a server on your behalf. The new realms will have the charming names “New World 1-10,” which is a clear indicator that Square Enix is putting as little thought into this as possible. They’re even jamming French and German players together on the same realm. Those are similar languages, right?

It’s just one more step in a much needed cleanup for FFXIV, which has been on its last legs several time before rallying yet again to an unlikely success. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.

Very unprofessionall y written article to say the least. Full of bias and personal negativity towards the game likely incurred from bad experiences with the game prior to recent updates.

Pro tip: It's not okay to write a news article with such great subjectivity without any notable sources to back it up.

Incredibly poorly written, amazingly bias, and lacking research and sourcing.

The servers will not be named 1-10, the names are quite simply not decided upon yet.

The method of merging the servers has been under feedback and discussion since it's announcement, and is set to alter to a more friendly low pop server to high pop server with the optional ability to choose a new server if you wish to.

As for hemmorhaging players, a good few servers never truly filled, they over estimated the needed amount of worlds, a much better option than underestimating it and having to expand hastily.

Lastly, no, the German and French players are not being 'placed on the same world' they've been told that world 10 (name tentative) will be more for the EU timezone, in order for the French and German players, who often are on at completely different times to the japanese and US playerbase and have few people to play with, will be able to come together and form a stronger community.

Language barrier? Auto Translator has let me play with Japanese players since the game's release, and i have no idea how to speak or read any form of Japanese.

This post is a joke. Anyone who plays FFXIV would know that "New World 1-10" will actually be given the names of the ten most popular worlds at the time of the merge. They aren't just going to be called "New World" you dunce. Secondly, the game is not popular right now, so merging the servers will allow for a better gaming experience and relieve some network load. During the month of merging, players can change their server freely, even if they picked one. If you don't play an MMO in over a month, you probably won't care about the merge anyway. The French/German server is by no means being forced for players, it is just suggested they go there so they will find more players who speak their language and have a better playing experience.

And finally, this gross misrepresentati on from someone who doesn't play the game failed to mention that SE has been working extremely hard since the initial release date to completely revamp this game and re-release it later this year for the PS3 and PC as version 2.0. There are going to be a lot of changes made between now and that time. Their goal is not to be crappy, but to redeem themselves from the initial release.

If you're not going to play the game, and not read about the facts, please don't comment about it.

ouh for god sake, FF fanboys admit it they Fail at XIV. I dont know why they keep calling the game FFXIV, they had to "fix"?Nooooo. They have to almost start from the scratch, becuz they screw the game.

If they just called this one FFXV they surely had more success, but they didnt just becuz in a near future people dont say "huh? what happen to FFXIV? Enix screw the game sooooo badly!"

This article sucks. It has no credible sources and half of the information is incorrect. I won't defend the game and say it's amazing, because it certainly isn't, but I can see a fair amount of effort being placed into its future release.

I'm not going to recommend the game to anybody, but I also won't condone any nonsense like this crap. If anyone is actually considering purchasing the game and is reading through these comments I would look elsewhere for information. I'd say the game still has a lot in store for newer players, not so much for endgame players.
