EA's John Riccitiello comments on faster development cycles

If there's one thing that doesn't surprise people in this digital age anymore, it's the fact that technology changes at such a rapid pace. Companies like publishers who are in the business of technology should be well aware and highly adaptive to the demands of such a cycle.

electronic-arts-buildingElectronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello knows this all too well as he spearheads the company straight into the thick of the digital era. "The industry has radically changed and the pace of change has accelerated dramatically," he noted. "Gone forever is the 4-to-5 year console cadence that game developers ample time to invest and retool for the next big wave."

And really, his observation is true. Now, it only takes several months before hardware companies come out with new models. Further expounding on this, he said, "Consider that just 18 months ago there was no iPad, Google was experimenting with Android, and most big games were limited to a single revenue opportunity at launch. Consider that each of the major consoles now has a controller that encourages users to get off the couch and get into the action."

Because of this forward move by tecnology, games, therefore, should also be up to speed. With more technology available, it therefore follws that there is a wider audience market to reach. This is what the companies should be aware of, and tap into accordingly. "Whilte the game industry has fundamentally changed, games are reaching a far larger audience base than ever."

So what is EA doing in light of all these (r)evolutionary changes in the industry? "We recognize that creative and engineering talent is at the core of what we do, and we are making sure that EA is the best place to work for these industry leaders." In fact, that's why they put up their new Austin studio. Providing 300 new jobs should be "a great example of our commitment to this strategy."

The CEO had proclaimed back in May that their company "failed well" in this generation, in the sense that they used their experiences getting knocked down into windows of new opportunities. One such new opportunity is also their set acquisition of PopCap Games.
