It's only recently that we came to realize how downloadable content has become the meat and potatoes of most game distributors. If you would recall, Blitz had teamed up with third party developers to come up with Blitz Arcade marketplace. Then, of course, with next-gen games coming down the pipeline, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are beefing up their download marketplaces to make way for easy acquisition of these games as well. Competition may have led EA to overhaul their EA Downloader and come up with the EA Link service. What you do is simply download the application from the EA Link page and you can access the PC games directly to your computer without having to log online or browse cluttered titles on the interface. EA has managed to make the interface and the whole process of acquiring exclusive content a breezy experience for the players. We think they definitely deserve a thumbs-up for this one.
You won't be missing the old way, that's for sure. EA tells us that's it not just a pretty website, they have also added the available bandwidth to decrease lag time for downloads. And yeah, we also wondered EA link can be used for the PS3. Chip Lange from EA says that they are looking at this possibility, but for the meantime they are concentrating on the success of the EA link. Distribution options may come later.
