EA and Zynga: To Sim Or Not To Sim |
Listed in: News Tags: EA, the sims social, the ville, zynga
Video game publisher giant Electronic Arts has recently filed suit against social media game provider Zynga for copyright infringement. EA, the developer of hit games like Madden and other sports games is claiming that Zynga copied key components of The Sims Social game and instituted those elements in their own brand entitled The Ville. EA’s Lucy Bradshaw is contending that Zynga’s The Ville mimics The Sims Social in so many categories that the games can’t readily be discerned at first glance.

EA is claiming that Zynga flat out copied the personality traits of The Sims characters, not to mention identical colors for gamers to choose the skin tone for their characters. Both The Ville and The Sims Social are available on Facebook.
Zynga is no stranger to lawsuits. EA marks only the latest company accusing Zynga of copying elements from other games for use in their games which now dominate the Facebook landscape. Zynga up to this point has been able to ward off most of the allegations.
Reginald Davis of Zynga stated “It’s unfortunate that EA thought that this was an appropriate response to our game, and clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of basic copyright principles.” Zynga is prepared to fight EA’s allegations.
