The game Doom has it's place in history for being both a mix of fun gameplay, secretive panels and a lack of storyline which has given first person shooters a bad name. What is worse is the name it is given overseas with the game being banned in Germany for several years.
For those of you who don't really know, Germany (much like Australia) has a fairly busy history when it comes to game and media history. Whether it's our history of people enjoying media too much or mass killers, we may never know, but it might have something to do with our culture apparently being full of people who will kill...hmmm.
So anyway, Doom, has been removed from Germany's 'List of Media Harmful to Young People' and given a USK16+ rating. The USK16+ Rating is the US equivalent for an Adults Only rating and would limit the game from being available to almost no one, to just adults.
Doom, along with its sequel were removed from the “Harmful” list, which is referred to in Germany as just “the Index- after an appeal filed by current copyright owner ZeniMax Media, which also happens to own Bethesda Softworks. The game was acquired back in 2009 with a few otther IP properties. Why they've done it now is a bit beyond me? But it is a win nonetheless.
The index, maintained by the 1984 sounding Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons, is essentially Germany's answer to the ESRB and MPAA, but is mostly used to limit minors' access to the nation's distinct brand of hardcore pornography. I've no real problem with this and games being not given to people under the age of 15 (16 for Germany, clearly) and depending the maturity of a 15 year old, some games probably wouldn't appeal any lower age outside of unbridled chaotic fun.

USK 0: Early Childhood, Everyone
USK 6: Everyone, Everyone 10+
USK 12: Everyone 10+, Teen
USK 16: Teen
USK 18: Mature
The USK doesn't have a adults only equivalent. Your adults only stuff is often confiscated in germany.

The number after USK is the recommended age.
