Digital Commissioner says copyright law encourages piracy |

The Digital Agenda Commissioner of the European Union has criticised the hardened enforcement of copyright law in the European countries, saying it encourages piracy more than it spurns it. While the commissioner is probably talking more about cinema and the music industry, it could not be more true of the games industry, as DRM and companies try and curse it's consumers with DRM which pirates just skate by with their cool Cracks and their mods...man they hate those kids.
Neelie Kroes, the commissioner, says something needs to change because the system is just making it worse. Kroes questions "Is the current copyright system the right and only tool to achieve our objectives? Not really", she adds, "we need to keep on fighting agaisnt piracy, but legal enforceability is becoming increasingly difficult," Kroes goes on to talk about the amounts of money invested and how it has made very little difference.
Kroes also notes the lack of public concern or knowledge on the matter and also the punishments rarely fit the crime nor has there been any new forms of digital rights management that does not harm the consumer. While Kroes didn't outline anything new, she did argue that the current system is a "set of rules made for a different age" and really cuts the head off any meaningful development for new or better ideas that are good for creator and/or consumers.
Kroes said that there needs to be more financially viable and flexible forms of legal and financial matters, that both corporations and consumers need to think about when they make something or purchase something. I think Kroes is doing the sensible thing with trying to find a middle ground for this kind of problem rather than outright going one way or another and I can't wait to see what she has to say in the future.
