Dedicated servers FTW!

Everyone's got something to say about Infinity Ward's (odd) decision to drop dedicated servers for the PC Modern Warfare 2 (also on PS3, Xbox 360). Included in the "everyone" list is DICE's K.M. Troedsson.

Heading to his Twitter account, he tweets his opinion on the matter:

Dedicated servers FTW. What ever secures a better online experience is a given for us.

He did not explicitly mention Modern Warfare 2 or Infinity Ward, but come on. It's not rocket science to figure out he was taking a swipe at them. And boy, do a lot of people agree with him, too.

And so we go back to the most primordial question: What gives, Infinity Ward?

» For damn sure.

Dedicated Servers FTW. I can't even play COD anymore, unless I'm hosting, simply because player hosted servers suck ass. At least implement a screening process to give the server to the best connection. Ugh.

» You all have to buy Battlefield: Bad Company 2

@ least it looks like DICE will listen to the fans, and it's looking like an epic mix of graphics from Killzone 2 and chaotic massacre of MW2.

» yay.

At least DICE knows we appreciate it!

Pc gaming is dead, if you really like games you'll need to accept it, get a console and stop being stupid.

its over.

People have been saying that for the past five maybe ten years and it still isn't true. I doubt it ever will be.

» Well.....

It could be that your internet sucks? Im fine here playing on servers in NL and US even though im in UK. But it is a Fibre connection. GO VIRGIN MEDIA (Vermin?)

» Hmm.

My connection is 25 Mb Down/3 Mb Up. So no, it does not suck. I'm actually talking about the console versions as the PC versions are fine. If you recall reading I state that whenever I host the game runs fine. This is not due to me having host advantage, although that is true, this is due to me seeing everyone who has a decent connection in game as having either 4-5 bars indicating a great connection. When I play on the vast majority of other players' connections I rarely have more than two bars, as does everyone else.

In the PC version you don't get bars you get ping. And ping doesn't mean speed of the download, it means the speed of the message(packet) getting to the server.

You could have 1Tb down but if it has a crappy ping rate then there's no point as you wouldnt get a stable connection. And dedi servers on console versions are hosted on huge 10Gbps connections. Private servers are put on 3Mb up servers.

There isn't alot of bandwidth and ability to to do things with that.

BTW try www.pingtest.net

» Yes.....

Game developers are deviating from PC games and moving to console's as they are cheaper. But they still will make a PC version of all the games which are good and exclusive. MW2?

But it wouldn't get that much of support. But thats been sorted with private servers so that they can patch it on their side

What are you talking about?

I'm not talking about the PC version as I state quite clearly. I know what I'm talking about when it comes to Internet speeds, download, upload, ping times, whatever.

The point I'm trying to make here is that player hosted servers are in the majority terrible and most CONSOLE games use them, save for PS3 Exclusives and whatnot, player hosted games suffer from the fact that most people don't know jack ***** about their own connection thus creating a terrible experience and one that can easily be avoided if companies would pay for dedicated servers for their games. The matchmaking servers may be hosted on 10Gbps connections, which I doubt, but the games themselves are not.

PC games have almost always had dedicated servers, paid for by the gamer or the actual developer. This is starting to change for the worst.

I find that the console's player hosted servers on COD4 are perfect. I've never got below 5 bars but the problem could be that where you live, people don't have fast connections. Or if your in america, people are more spread out and stuff. While in Europe we are kinda squeezed in like sardines.

The game (COD4 PS3) automatically picks the best server for your location looking at ping and your connection.

I've never seen that problem unless if i am downloading on my PC and hogging the connection.
