DICE still discussing mod tools for Battlefield 3

One of the main attractions of PC games is that users can usually install mods that can be used for everything from small, subtle changes to full-scale conversions that affect everthing from gameplay to graphics. These are only available if the PC game in question supports modding, however. Battlefield 3 does not fall into that category.

Speaking to IGN, DICE boss Karl Magnus Troedsson explained that the decision not to allow modding in the highly anticipated shooter stemmed partly from the potential risks that modding can lead to, particularly hacks and exploits. According to him, the abuse of modding tools can destroy the experience for other gamers.

"It's a bit scary to take an investment like Battlefield 3 and just let people dig into that engine and do whatever they want," he said. "We're dedicated to try and really limit the amount of hacks and exploits that come out there, but as soon as you let something like that out, people have all the tools in the world that they need to sit there and try to create cheats that actually would destroy the experience for a lot of other people.

"I'm not blaming mod tools for hacks and exploits in any way, but there's a lot of things we need to consider."

Security concerns aside, there may still be a chance for a post-lanch mod tool to be released. Troedsson said that they've heard the calls for an official modding tool loud and clear and are "talking about it" in the studio. "I'm not promising that we're going to do it in any way," he clarified, "but we have heard it, and we'll see what we do in the future." Translation: Don't hold your breath.

lol, like having no modding tools will stop cheaters. You dont even need official support to mod a game. all it needs is one or two people that know their stuff and can be bothered to open it all up.

Whats happening with this game is so similar to cod its almost funny.
