DICE: No Mod Tools Coming for BF3 |

One of the most impressive things about DayZ and its immense success is that it’s not a game at all, but a mod for Arma II. Without Arma II, there could be no DayZ—and Arma II’s sales are benefiting heavily from this fact. Arma II has hung out near the top of Steam’s sales charts essentially since DayZ debuted.
When this happens, gamers naturally want to know why other developers aren’t opening up to the modding community. After all, if someone makes an awesome mod and helps you move a few thousand copies of your game, where’s the harm?

One company that gamers seem to be focused on is DICE, the maker of Battlefield 3. Because Battlefield 2 did have official modding tools and Battlefield 3 did not, fans of the series have long been begging DICE to add some sort of official mod support. They did it before, right?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like DICE is going to be adding mod tools any time soon. Speaking at Gamescom, general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson noted that DICE is afraid of the exploits and hacks that could come along with releasing parts of the game’s code to the public. He also mentioned that DICE would prefer to provide mod tool to all gamers—not just those with PCs.
So, for now it looks like you’re stuck with the basic Battlefield 3 package. Which is a damn shame—BF3 is one of the best-looking shooters around and has infinite modding potential. We’re still waiting on those dinosaurs.
Would you like DICE to bring modding back to Battlefield?
