Diablo 3 may run into gambling problems with South Korea |

When it comes to video games, the idea of the game of chance turns up often. Whether it's finding random battles, finding a loot drop or your game dropping outat a random moment in a particular EA FPS. However, when the game's random sections of the game can be a fiancial gain to another with real money changing hands in Diablo's Auction House.
Korea recently started a campaign to begin banning on gambling to curb the problem to some degree. However, no one thought it'd start with gaming. Games such as Pokemon even have gambling and whilst I haven't played latest iterations, but I do wonder if they will be mentioned in the upcoming games that may be banned. One of the games is obviously Diablo 3, and Blizzard is not exactly happy about the situation.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime has denied these claims about Korea's banning of the game but says that while the two were superficially similar, Diablo 3's real money auction house lacked one of the key parts of gambling: risk. "[In Diablo 3] you're not risking anything," he said. "You're just investing your time. It is an important distinction."
Despite Morhaime's protests, according to a report presented to the South Korean National Assembly, Diablo 3 breaks Article 1 of the current Gaming Industry Promotion Law. There is a precedent for equating cash auction houses to gambling. Another game, made by the South Korean developer IMI, Emperor Online was recently denied classification for having a similar feature. Sources say that Blizzard employees in South Korea were aware that the auction house would be a difficult sell with the game ratings board, but had to proceed anyway, due to timing and beta testing.
If the game is refused classification, it will be quite the blow for Blizzard as they have a renowned business with the Korean public. Diablo 3comes out everywhere else easily for PC in early 2012 without any gambling issues.
