Darkspore Beta now live on Steam

Gamers eager to try out Maxis' fast-paced sci-fi action-RPG can now download the beta on Steam.

Available now through Friday of this week, PC gamers can now grab the free Darkspore beta on Steam. As an added treat, Steam has announced an exclusive pre-purchase offer: a four-pack of Darkspore for the price of three.

Scheduled to arrive this April, Darkspore is an online, science-fiction action role-playing game that features dynamic, fast-paced action as players battle through different alien worlds to save the galaxy from the mutated forces of Darkspore in a four-player co-operative and full single-player campaign, as well as intense multiplayer battles.

“Darkspore is inspired in part by the award-winning creature editor tech of Spore, but also in large part from the team’s own passion for gaming and prior experience,” said Lucy Bradshaw, General Manager of Maxis Studio in a previous press release. "The team has combined these inspirations to produce a unique take on the action RPG genre.”

And in case you're wondering if your system can handle the game, here's the listed system requirements:

OS: Windows XP SP3/Vista SP2/Windows 7
Processor: 3.0 GHz P4 or Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz or equivalent or faster
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Hard Disk Space: Up to 10 GB of hard drive space
Video Card: 256 MB Video Card with support for Shader Model 3.0 containing these chipsets or better:
- NVIDIA GeForce 8800
- ATI X1900
- Intel HD Graphics
DirectX: DirectX 9, DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 compatible video card
Sound: DirectX compatible sound card
