Homefront developer Kaos Studios may be out of the picture, but THQ is still forging ahead with its plans to turn the shooter into the first entry of a new franchise. To follow up the original, the publisher has enlisted the help of Crysis 2 developer Crytek.

THQ announced today that Crytek will be taking the helm in development of the sequel, which has yet to be given an official name. It is currently slated for a 2014 launch on home gaming consoles and the PC platform.

"Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry's best talent," said Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games, THQ. "Homefront's unique setting and storyline captivated gamers the world over. With Crytek's industry leading technology and legendary experience in the FPS genre, we're supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand."

"We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ," said Cevat Yerli, Founder, CEO and President of Crytek. "It's really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way."

Although Homefront managed to reach good numbers sales-wise, it did receive lackluster reviews. THQ chose to shutter Kaos Studios just three months after the game launched as part of what they dubbed "strategic realignment" along with its UK studio.

Crytek's certainly got the pedigree when it comes to first-person shooters. One thing that can raise a bit of consternation, however, is that where Homefront was praised for its good story, Crysis 2 didn't fare quite as well story-wise. If they successfully meld the original's good points with Crytek's graphics wizardry, then Homefront 2 just might be the next big shooter.
