Valve plans to include cross-platform play when Counter-Strike: Global Offensive arrives next year.

Last week, Valve announced the long-awaited successor to its Counter-Strike series, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. What's surprising about the announcement is the fact the series is now going multiplatform. A move that Valve wants to further explore, by giving gamers an opportunity to play against other players of any platform, just like Portal 2 does between PC and PS3.

"That's certainly our goal. We never want to create these 'islands of players,'" Valve boss Gabe Newell told PCGames.de (via Blue's News). "You have to be sensitive to control differences, and make sure you're accommodating that, but, you know, our view is players should be able to play as part of a community on whatever device they can."

"You know, sometimes there are contractual, or other issues that make that hard, where somebody, a platform holder doesn't want you to do that for whatever reason, but that's always our preference, to let customers play and be part of the larger community."

Developed by Valve in collaboration with Hidden Path Entertainment, Global Offensive is slated to arrive early 2012 on the Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac).

Sorry but for once I havta say thats a horrible idea. Pc gamers will destroy console gamers in CS or any other fps. Thats not a fanboy rant I play my ps3 more than anything but micro$oft did the study on this already and deemed it unfair to pit them against each other.

Yeah, I remember that.
Microsoft tried to attribute it to the mouse/keyboard control scheme, but HP (who was also apart of the study) said that it was pretty much just PC gamers on average being better.

Well they're going to 'accommodate', so I guess that could level the playing field. Only if they do it right of course.

I know quite a bit of people who play counter strike source and TF2 with controller on the pc that stomp anybody's ass who uses keyboard and mouse. Cross platform play is an awesome thing that needs to be incorporated to bring all the gamers together. And hell for people like you who don't necessarily want to do that they oughta put in a feature that allows searching for these servers to be turned off.

The concept was to allow cross-platform online gaming with games like Gears of War and Unreal Tournament. During the development they brought together the best console gamers to play mediocre PC gamers at the same game... and guess what happened? They pitted console gamers with their "console" controller, against PC gamers with their keyboard and mouse.
The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative.~Ars

Im not just blowing smoke up the bum its been tested.

I also read that, when you think of it people can get extremely good at using a controller, but when you need aim assist to play there's something wrong, when the PC gamers on the other hand doesn't need that it's quite obvious who'll have the advantage.

Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3 let you use a mouse and keyboard to play it.... Problem solved if valve does the same thing... And if you ever played CSS on PC you would know there is a lot of user made maps and game modes that dont focus on slaughtering each other.... Such as jail break and Surf (and before you complain saying "consoles cant have that though" refer back to my UT3 example.... )

Remember how rediculously painful it was to cook UT3 mods and maps into something the PS3 could play? Probably not... your probably never did it. I did and its a pain in the ass. Unlike PCs where memory restrictions are in the 2gb+ range normally with plenty of CPU overhead, consoles are tightly budgeted and a map that was demanding on PCs ended up putting the PS3 in the single digits. Mods didn't even work at all because of the overhead required.

The point was in saying it's possible and it has been done before... You come across as though your trying to say it's a waste of time when UT3 was just a first step in a right direction. Sure wasn't the greatest but it's just a start... Scared consoles are going to get more mod compatibilities and make PC gaming is even more in the toilet?
