CoD4 packaged with Punkbuster Anti-Cheat software |
Ó
Activision has enlisted Even Balance Inc. for their proprietary software PunkBuster Anti Cheat to police Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer games on the PC. This software will be incorporated into the game itself making it harder for hackers to crack. The application itself is pretty solid with reliable features such as real time memory scans by PB Client on players' computers searching for hacks/cheats and even a two-tiered background auto-update system using multiple Internet Master Servers to prevent spoofing. It is perhaps due to these safeguards that the company has been tapped for popular games such as Quake III, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and the first two Call of Duty games.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (also available for the Xbox 360 and PS3) is slated to be out by November 5 this year. Hopefully, with PunkBuster installed, we'll be able to play more without worrying about cheaters ruining everyone's fun.

Counter-strike/TFC, it wasn't pretty... Course, developers get better with time, so I'm sure they've perfected over the last 5-8 years.
